Just got back from listening to David Rochkind, Emily Matyas, and David Taylor give a lecture. All three of them photograph mexican culture and life but David Rochkind’s work really activated me. His use of color is absolutely stunning. Emily Matya’s work did the same in the sense of her tangibility and apparent relationship with these people which allowed her to make very intimate portraits. There was this beautiful Rochkind image of a 20-30 year old mexican woman knelt at an alter with only her face visible, amidst all the alter decorations, gleaming from the tears that previously ran down her face just looking up so iconically at the virgin mary and I knew right away thats the image I wanted for tonights post. Hell, I was even tempted to pry about getting it in print! But alas, no such thing happened, and I couldnt find it on the web. So this Rochkind image won instead…
